Each industry partner carries its MOU, the number of students it can take, and the roles it has offered before. Placement is a relationship business and the relationships usually live in one person’s head; this is where they live instead, so next year’s officer starts from what this year’s built.

Vacancies, and the students who fill them

A vacancy carries the role and its requirements; applications match students to it. Who applied, who was placed, who is still unplaced with three weeks to go — the question the placement office is asked every week, answered from a list rather than from memory.

The logbook, filled in as it happens

Diary entries against the placement, written while the attachment is running rather than reconstructed the night before it is due. The logbook is the student’s evidence of what they actually did, and it is worth what its timing is worth.

The supervisor’s assessment, scored

The host supervisor scores the competencies they observed, and the report attaches to the placement and the partner both. It feeds the final grade, and it tells the placement office something about the employer as well as the student.
